Gautam Gambhir Interviews for Team India Coach Position
On Tuesday, it was reported that the BCCI held talks with Gautam Gambhir for the position of Team India head coach. However, he is not the only candidate, as WV Raman, the former coach of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team from December 2018 to May 2021, was also interviewed.
Reports suggest that Gambhir is the BCCI’s top choice to fill the hot seat after Rahul Dravid departs at the end of the T20 World Cup. In the past, Gambhir has expressed his desire to coach Team India.
“Look, I would love to coach the Indian team,” Gambhir said. “There is no bigger honour. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians. And more across the globe as well. And when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?,” Gambhir said during an event in Abu Dhabi on June 1.
Gambhir’s coaching profile has skyrocketed after he led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title this year. The title was the cherry on top of the team’s overall performance, characterized by an aggressive brand of cricket, complemented by a cautious approach during tough situations. Gambhir’s team always had the answers to the challenges they faced during the IPL 2024 campaign. He helped players reach their peak, and the camaraderie within the group was also highly praised.
Gambhir was also asked whether he can help the Indian team win the world cup, and he stated that it’s not only the coach but fans also play a big part in the success of the team.
“How can I help India win the World Cup – I think it’s not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 crore Indians that will help India win the World Cup.”
“If everyone starts praying for us, and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless and yes, I would love to coach India.”
Current Team India head coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure is coming to an end after the T20 World Cup. BCCI had earlier stated that the new coach would be given a three-and-a-half-year deal, starting from July 2024 to December 2027.
