Mitchell Marsh played only four games in IPL 2024 before suffering a hamstring injury. The Aussie captain flew to Australia to expedite his rehabilitation and be fit for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. For the unversed, Marsh has been appointed as the captain of the Aussie team for the T20 WC. Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, has provided a positive update on the Delhi Capitals all-rounder before the big tournament.
Mitchell Marsh On Track To Be Fit For T20 World Cup 2024
Australia head coach Andrew McDonald sounded positive while discussing about the fitness of captain Mitchell Marsh. The 32-year-old has been sidelined since April 3, last playing in Delhi Capitals’ fourth IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight riders at Eden Gardens. But as per McDonald, Marsh is on track to be for the T20 showpiece event.
“He’s progressing well. Probably a little slower than expected,” McDonald said. “But we’ve got plenty of time now that he has been ruled out the IPL,” McDonald said.
“(Our) first game is just short of a month away now. So ample time for him to get ready.
“You probably won’t see him bowl in the next couple of weeks here. It’ll probably happen the week before we leave. And then he’ll be able to ramp that up when we’re over there.
“We’ll be able to cherry-pick the moments during the tournament where he’ll be useful with the ball, (and) we’ve got some all-round depth in the squad, which gives us good coverage anyway.”
Although McDonald was positive that Marsh would be available to play in Australia’s opening T20 World Cup game against Oman on June 6, he did say that should the situation arise, Australia has no dearth of options when it comes to leading the side. Players such as Mathew Wade, David Warner and of course, ODI World Cup winning captain Pat Cummins are more than ready to lead the side
“We’ve got ample depth in the leadership space there with Matthew Wade, who’s led before when Mitch hasn’t been available. And obviously, Pat Cummins has some leadership qualities,” McDonald added.
