RCB vs PBKS IPL 2024: Even the most ardent Royal Challengers Bangalore fan couldn’t have written a better script for the home clash against Punjab Kings. A jam-packed M. Chinnaswamy Stadium with the vociferous home fans taking the decibel levels to astronomical heights, Faf du Plessis taking the best possible decision to bowl first after winning the toss and bowlers with enough efforts to keep the scoreboard within measured degrees.
Inconsistent Scorer – PBKS
Punjab made a slow start to the match and they were even in more trouble after Jonny Bairstow departed early in the 3rd over. Shikhar Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh showed little to no intent in the powerplays with PBKS’ score reaching 40/1. Dhawan and Singh upped the ante eventually as the duo scored a combined 31 runs in the next three overs. But Prabhsimran, while going for a big shot, was caught out by Anuj Rawat off Maxwell’s ball on the last ball of 9th over.
The problem for PBKS was that they played too many dot balls. After 9 overs Punjab had 72 runs on the board. They scored 14 runs in the 11th over, 17 in the 15th over and got 20 runs in the 20th over. That’s 51 runs in only three overs, while in the remaining 8 overs (counting after 9 overs), Punjab could only get 53 runs.
Kohli Off To A Hot Start
Virat Kohli reminded everyone, not that anyone needed to know, that why he is the King of all format. The 35-year-old looked ominously dangerous in the very first over as he smacked Sam Curran for four consecutive fours. But the highlight of his innings was the shot he played in Kagiso Rabada‘s very first ball. Kohli came dancing down the pitch and hit a good-length ball over the deep-cover. In between, Faf du Plessis and Cameron Green went cheap, with both falling for a combined six runs.
Kohli and Rajat Patidar (18 off 18) added 4 runs for the 3rd wicket. But Harpreet Brar sent Patidar back to the pavilion, with Glenn Maxwell (3 off 5) following the suite against the same bowler.
In the over 13th, 14th and 15th, RCB could manager only 3, 5 and 7 runs respectively.
With pressure mounting, Kohli tried to up the ante that eventually cost him his wicket on the last ball of 16th over.
With 57 runs needed to win in the last four overs, RCB needed a miracle. And it came in the form of Dinesh Karthik.
Karthik smacked 28 runs in only 10 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes. The veteran neded support still and got from Mahipal Lomror who also played a blinder, scoring 17 runs off 8 balls.
That improbable win started a meme fest across all social media handles. Here’s the best of the best:
