As India lost the fourth test due to yet another batting collapse, questions are being raised to know the reason behind the big defeat. At the center of this storm is the head coach of Team India, Gautam Gambhir. The former Kolkata Knight Riders head coach took over the reins of Indian team from Rahul Dravid who decided to step down following India's win in the T20 World Cup.
Expectations were sky-high from Gambhir that he could take India to even newer heights, but so far, it has been a bumpy ride. The lowest point under Gambhir was the total whitewash in the three-match test series against New Zealand.
Now, after the defeat in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series against Australia, focus is as much on Gambhir as it's on senior players.
All is not well Inside Indian Cricket Team Dressing Room
India lost the fourth test match at MCG by a whopping 184-run margin. More than the margin of defeat, is the batting approach of some Indian players, especially senior players. The weird shot selection by some players has irked Gautam Gambhir. India were in a good position to draw the test on Day 5, but lost the last seven wickets for a meagre 34 runs, with most batsmen playing rash shots.
As per a report in the Indian Express, Gambhir vented his frustration towards some players and highlighted their irresponsible approach in the MCG test. It is believed that the frustration was mostly aimed at senior players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, with the latter drawing criticism from legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
In addition, reports also highlight that Gambhir made it clear to the players that should the recent trend continue, he is not afraid to drop players from the Indian team, even the senior players.
Gambhir Wanted Pujara For The Border-Gavaskar Series
As per reports, Gautam Gambhir wanted veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara for the Australia series, but the selectors turned his request down. Pujara's last test match appearance for Team India came in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in 2023, in which he scored 14 and 27 runs across two innings. But his record in Australia speaks volume, as he has scored 993 runs in 11 innings, at an average of 47.28 in Australia.
